Just like fitness trackers, care beds or sensor-based home emergency call systems, earthworms, dairy cows and bees also care for each other, for nature and for humans. In international discourses, care is no longer understood as an intentional, genuinely human action, but rather as a collective, socio-material practice in which not only human objects participate; animals, substances, artifacts, etc. are also – so the assumption – generally involved in care practices. Against this general de-differentiation of care, the dissertation project aims to reformulate the specific nature of human care, its dimensions and its foundations. To this end, the project is guided by the following questions: Which theoretical discourses on care can be reconstructed and how are they related to each other? What relationship between self and (surrounding) world crystallizes in care discourses and practices? To what extent do species-specific forms of care differ from one another and how can they be characterized? On a theoretical-conceptual level, this work refers to posthuman considerations and approaches from philosophical anthropology.
