Undergrounds of disposal. Sociogeological processes in the final disposal of radioactive waste <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern industrialized societies are increasingly confronted with questions regarding the disposal of the waste materials they produce. In addition to socio-technical challenges, the inclusion of the environment and nature also plays a central role in the development of sustainable disposal scenarios. This is where the project comes in: The case of dealing with highly radioactive waste materials is used to investigate how societies access their undergrounds and produce knowledge and non-knowledge about their underground environments and at the same time with underground materiality in order to develop long-term stable repositories. In the case of nuclear waste disposal, subsoils are particularly prominent as geological formations from which science, politics and civil society hope to gain stabilizing potential with regard to the permanent containment of radionuclides. From an environmental sociological perspective at the interface to science and technology research, the project thus focuses on socio-geological relations in the field of natural science repository research. Against the background of qualitative-empirical research, it focuses on experimentation with repository-relevant materials in natural sciences laboratories; it also analyzes the procedure of geosphere modelling at the interface to biosphere modelling as a generation of calculable futures. Conceptually, the project contributes to the question of how engineered societies incorporate nature and the environment into socio-technical systems for the disposal of toxic waste and how this underground environment affects scientifically developed and socially legitimized disposal projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arts at work. Artistic work between practice and phenomenon <\/strong>(completed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dissertation project examined artistic work in the field of visual arts from an ethnographic perspective. In art academies and art colleges, studios and exhibitions, the study looked at how artists deal with materials, how artistic works are developed for exhibition projects and how the resulting artworks are assessed by artists. The study drew on practice-theoretical approaches, supplemented by Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, with the aim of including not only practical knowledge but also perception in its execution in order to make artistic approaches spokespersons and to open them up further for Sociology.
